I need information about disability and community care issues. How do I go about getting it?
SCILL is the borough's leading advice and support service for disability and community care issues. You can call us or drop in Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm and have a chat with one of our Information and Support officers. We have a variety of resources and expertise at our fingertips to help you with your questions. Alternatively email your query and we will get back to you within 2 days.
Can you help me with my Support Plan?
Yes we can help you by either supporting you to complete your plan, giving you information about a Peer who will work with you or by working out what information and costs you need. In the first instance you will need to come in and have a chat with us so we can work out what you would like us to do and how much time you will need.
How do I get a RADAR key?
Easy. Drop in to SCILL and buy a key for £3 or you can ask us to send it through the post for £3.50. You will need to provide proof of disability such as a Blue Badge, a Disability Freedom Pass or a letter from your GP.
Who can use a Blue Badge?
Each badge applies to the person it is awarded to. It is for that person's sole use either as a driver or as a passenger. For further information about who is eligible for a Blue Badge and how to apply, contact us at the Information and Advice Service. We can provide you with an application form.
I have an almost new electric wheelchair / scooter to sell or eventually donate. Can SCILL help?
SCILL does not buy or sell disability equipment but we can help you advertise items on the Askdes website. We can also give advice about local organisations who deal in second hand furniture and equipment.
Where can I buy disability equipment?
We do not recommend any one provider but we can give you a list of local providers of both new and second hand disability equipment. This list is found on Factsheets 3 and 4 (factsheets can be found on our webpage and are downloadable). Alternatively drop in and get your factsheets, and take the opportunity to get further one to one advice from one of our officers
What is Dial-a-Ride?
This is a transport service for people who have difficulty using conventional public transport due to a disability. It cannot be used for hospital appointments or trips to a daily workplace. For further information on eligibility criteria and details about how the service works, contact our team. We can provide you with an application form.
I am now looking after my elderly father. Would I qualify for a carer's allowance?
This question cannot be answered without having further information about you and your father and is best dealt with by talking to one of our team. We can then talk through the eligibility criteria and give advice on taking the next steps to applying for this allowance.
Where can I find out about taking a disabled person on holiday?
Call us or better still come and see us where we can help you do research and can give you tailor made information. We hold a wide variety of guides and brochures on disabled friendly locations with accessible accommodation and are happy to help you plan a holiday from start to finish. You may also want to do your own research online and we can point you in the direction of useful websites.
Can you help me find some leisure activities for my husband who has mobility problems?
Yes. You simply give us a call or drop in and we can use our extensive local database and contacts to find what you need.
Where can I hire a manual wheelchair for a few weeks?
Look at our downloadable Factsheet for a list of providers. You will need to call them and get details of their services. Alternatively we can assist you with this but we do not make any recommendations.
