I was a participant at SCILL for a couple of years then I decided to become a volunteer because I felt that I had more to give. My duties are to be an escort when the banking is being done, stock checks and to place orders - ensuring that SCILL does not run out of anything!. I also make sure that the kitchen is clean and tidy. I replenish the conveniences with toilet paper, hand towels and soap. I socialise with participants and where necessary I provide teas and coffees, as well as general assistance. I also help with the running of the darts class and help to make sure that all who are there are having lots of fun and laughter!
The benefits I get from my role as a volunteer are the social aspect. As I have a disability myself, I can empathise with others with disabilities. I enjoy being an integral part of a strong team and hope to continue being a volunteer at SCILL because it gives me pride and pleasure.
